What is Size-Up? Understanding Multi-Dimension Capacity Planning

Summary

When you plan trips using only one capacity measure, the plan often looks fine on screen but fails on the ground - vehicles get overloaded on weight even though there was room left for volume, or vice versa. Size-Up solves this by letting you plan against up to three capacity dimensions at once (for example weight, pallet spots, and volume), so the plan reflects the real constraints of your operation. Over-capacity trips, wasted space, and compliance issues are caught while you are still planning - not once the day is underway.

Prerequisites

- An active Luminar Starter subscription (Size-Up is an add-on module and cannot be used on its own).

- Your Business Unit must be set up as a Capacity-Constrained Business Unit. Size-Up is not available in Time-Constrained Business Units, because those only plan service tasks, which carry no sizes.

- Permission to access the Subscription Management page (usually an account admin/owner role) if you need to subscribe to or check pricing for Size-Up.

- Capacity limits configured on your Assets, since capacities are held at the Asset level.

Step-by-step instructions

1. Confirm your Business Unit type

Open your Business Unit settings and confirm it is Capacity-Constrained. If it is Time-Constrained, Size-Up will not be available until this is changed.

2. Check or subscribe to Size-Up

From the main menu after logging in, go to Subscription Management. Here you can view current pricing and subscribe to Size-Up. If you qualify for the 30-day free trial (one Business Unit with 5 or fewer resources), Size-Up is included automatically during the trial. If you start with more than 5 resources, the trial does not apply and your first payment is taken immediately on subscribing.

3. Define your capacity dimensions

Size-Up supports up to three capacity dimensions (Size 1, Size 2, Size 3). Pre-populated unit-of-measure options are provided as examples, or you can define your own custom dimension (for example weight, pallet spots, volumetric loading).

4. Set capacity limits per Asset

Because no two Assets are the same, set the capacity limit for each dimension on each individual Asset. For example, a courier vehicle might have separate limits for weight, pallet spots, and volumetric loading.

5. Plan trips as normal

As you plan or adjust trips, Luminar Works checks tasks against all three configured dimensions. In visual representations, Size 1 is shown first, followed by Size 2 and Size 3, while utilisation calculations always take all three dimensions into account.

6. Review and resolve over-capacity warnings

If a trip would exceed any configured limit, this is flagged immediately while you are still planning. You have two options:

- Adjust the trip - move or reassign tasks on the Gantt, or re-optimise with Smart Planning to rebuild the trip within limits.

- Accept the overflow - if the overage is deliberate and you're willing to run it, you can accept the trip as over capacity.

7. (Optional) Combine with other modules

- With Smart Planning, capacity dimensions are enforced as hard constraints - the optimiser will never build a trip that exceeds them.

- With Multi-day Planning, capacity dimensions are respected across every day of the planning horizon.

8. Removing Size-Up (if needed)

You can remove Size-Up at any time from Subscription Management. Your Luminar Starter base and any other active modules will keep working. Your data and settings are retained, and your configuration is restored automatically if you resubscribe later.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Size-Up in a Time-Constrained Business Unit?

No. Capacities are held on Assets, and service tasks - the only task type planned in Time-Constrained Business Units - carry no sizes.

Do I need Smart Planning to use Size-Up?

No. Size-Up works directly with Luminar Starter. Smart Planning isn't required, though it can speed up planning as your operation grows more complex.

Can different Assets have different capacity limits?

Yes. Limits are set per Asset, because no two are the same.

Can a trip ever exceed its capacity limits?

When the Smart Planning optimiser is used with Size-Up, capacities are treated as hard constraints and it will not build an over-capacity trip. A trip can still end up over capacity if it was manually adjusted on the Gantt, or if an Asset's capacity was edited after the trip was planned. Either way, Luminar Works will flag it clearly while the trip is still in the planned state.

When to contact support

Contact support if:

- Size-Up does not appear as an option even though your Business Unit is Capacity-Constrained and you have an active Luminar Starter subscription.

- Capacity limits set on an Asset are not being respected during planning or optimisation.

- A trip is showing as over-capacity but you cannot identify which dimension is being exceeded.

- Pricing shown on the Subscription Management page looks incorrect, or a trial/subscription charge does not match what you expect.

- You removed Size-Up and your previous capacity configuration was not restored correctly after resubscribing.
